Lol...
Following what many have described as an off-the-mark response of President Muhammadu Buhari, at a Commonwealth summit to a question that had no bearing on the answer he provided, Wikipedia has created a page for Lazy Nigerian Youths. As angry Nigerian youths reacted, the hashtag #LazyNigerianYouths generated hundreds of thousands of tweets, and millions of expressions under a week.
Buhari was simply asked about why he did not sign the African Continental Free Trade Agreement in Rwanda in March, but instead of giving his thoughts on the question, probably picked the word ‘free’, and heavily demarketed the future leaders of his country.
President Buhari had said many Nigerian youths like to sit down and do nothing, while expecting to get everything free because they believe that their country is an oil-producing one.
The very huge backlash that the hashtag #LazyNigerianYouth generated created so much of a trend that Wikipedia created had to create a page for it.
The Wikipedia page is tagged, ‘Lazy Nigerian Youths.’ Wikipedia defines it as a social media outrage by Nigerian youths.
Wikipedia says, “The Lazy Nigerian Youths (Also known as “#LazyNigerianYouth” or simply “#LazyYouth”) is a social media revolt by Nigerian youths against their President, Muhammadu Buhari.”
“While speaking at the Commonwealth Business Forum in Westminster in April Buhari said a lot of Nigerian youths have not been to school and they want everything free because the country is an oil-producing state. [1] But the Nigerian youths will not have any of it as they soon took to social media to protest against the comment of the number one citizen of the country.”
After a report of the event by TheCable Staff Writer, Mayowa Tijani[3], who happened to be the only Nigerian journalist allowed to attend the business forum, the Nigerian social media space went angry at the comment with millions of Nigerian youths tweeting about their ventures and how they work hard to make a living in a country that has done little to help her citizens survive.”
Wikipedia added that the controversy had got varying perceptions, as some saw a business opportunity in the trend and tagged along.
